ALMUÑÉCAR - HISTORY AND SPORT

 Taking a stroll through Almuñécar and the surrounding countryside we can see the past come alive. Around the village remains have been found that have been identified as belonging to the Phoenician settlement of Sexi, also can be seen the Roman aqueduct with its slake masonry and ventilation Shafts. In 1962 a necropolis was found in the vicinity os San Cristobal. In its 20 tombs, alabasta cremation urns were found. Arich collection of house hold pottery and Jewellery was also found dating back to XII b.c.

In 1982 the site of the ancient Phoenician Settlement was excavated in, what is known as, the Cave of the seven Palaces – today a museum.

Archaeological remains are still being found today in this beautiful town.
